2022-2023 OABO Interpreter Updates (Sept 9, 2022 – Rule Changes & Uniforms)

From the desk of OABO Interpreter, Michael Kim…

FIBA Rule Changes
Attached below are the 2022 FIBA Rule Changes.  OABO will be enforcing all the FIBA rule changes effective immediately rather than the Oct. 1st start date to reduce confusion by adopting rule changes after the start of the girls’ high school season.

CBOC will be hosting a Rules Changes update webinar along with the Super Clinic, which will be recorded for those who cannot attend live.  Exact date/time pending and will be announced shortly.

OFSAA Modified Rules
For the regions who still use OFSAA modified rules, no changes have been proposed for the upcoming season.  All boards are permitted to use full FIBA rules rather than OFSAA modified rules locally and is strongly encouraged.  The modified rules only strictly pertain to the OFSAA championships.

(1) The current FIBA Rule book shall be the official governing rule book governing play at the OFSAA Basketball Championships with the following exceptions:
• A 30 second shot will be used. Full reset on foul shot attempts and shots off the rim.
• Fouls and offensive rebounds would result in 30 second reset.
• National Federation lines will be used even when FIBA lines are available.
• National Federation game length will be used (including overtime).
• No dunking in the warm-up will be permitted [technical foul(s) assessed to player(s)].
(2) A technical foul shall be assessed against a team that crossed the half court line for the
purpose of intimidating an opponent.

Uniform Update
FIBA has adopted an update to the uniforms and undergarments as previously communicated.  These changes will have no impact at the levels up to and including Sr. High School and OBA (attached below), and the changes predominantly affect higher levels of play (not attached pending update).  A full updated Uniform and Undergarments document from CBOC is anticipated to follow later in the Fall.

Article 4 – arm and leg compression garments are now allowed. To be certain this means compression shirts, shorts, leggings – of any length may be worn, however, all players on the team must have all their arm and leg compression garments, headgear, wristbands, headbands, and tapings of the same solid colour. Compression undergarments shall be tight-fitting, an XS point guard may not wear an XXL compression shirt – this will not comply with the rule.

A big difference between High School/OBA levels and higher levels of play is with respect to the wearing of T-shirts, which is permitted at the lower aged levels, but NOT at the higher level of competition.

The mismatched shoe exemption has elapsed; thus, all players are expected to adhere to this rule at all levels of play.

Wishing you all a strong start to the 2022-2023 season!
